| The Harbour Life The most
notherly international ferry connection in the world
takes two hundred thousand travellers every year over the
Gulf of Bothnia to Sweden. Though nowadays it isn´t
Jacob Lines running the ferries, it´s Silja Line
Jakobstad is an excellent gateway for trips to the
northern part of Scandinavia.
The guest harbor of Jakobstad is
situated at the old harbor. If you cast anchor here you
vill come straight into an abundance of leisure-time
activities. It is only a ten minute walk to the centre of
Jakobstad.
The old harbour gives people who don't
have there own boats an opportunity to take a closer look
at the sea-world surrounding Jakobstad. In the summertime
a water-bus runs a regular rote to the lighthouse island
of Mässkär and to fishing settlements.
The
building of the 18th century galeass, the Jakobstads
Wapen, is a symbolic event for the whole of Jakobstad,
its history and population. You have to know that two
centuries ago we were the leading shipping town in the
country. As you can understand much water has run under
the bridge since then, and allmost the only thing we now
have left is the newbuilt galeass.
